You are here:

Debilitating neurological conditions can often be helped with regular, tailored Pilates or The Feldenkrais Method® lessons, helping you gain more control and independence in your day-to-day life. Ismini can help, creating sessions designed specifically for you to provide respite from symptoms and give you more freedom of movement.

How can The Feldenkrais Method® help those with neurological conditions?

The brain is able to change, adapt and grow neurological pathways.  This is known as neuroplasticity and this is at the core of the Feldenkrais Method®.  It is often referred to as “magic” by those who have experienced either Awareness Through Movement® group lessons or Functional Integration® private lessons.

The brain’s plasticity enables it to grow/form new neural connections and pathways in response to its environment, experiences and learning.  The Feldenkrais Method® takes the participant through gentle, mindful movements engaging the brain down a path of curiosity, exploration and discovery to create new neural pathways to enable it to rewire, re-root and reconnect itself for optimal function.

The Feldenkrais Method® helps you realise your habitual movement and posture patterns so that you can learn new habits thus improving your range of movement, coordination and overall wellbeing.  The Method very much centres on bringing the mind and self aka “body” to a deeper connection so that you are more aware of yourself, how you move and how you fit in and interact with the environment and world around you.

The Feldenkrais Method® gradually helps your entire self to reorganise and adapt to new ways of thinking, moving and doing things by tapping into the power of neuroplasticity.  With regular lessons you will notice how The Feldenkrais Method® brings profound improvements and your entire being feels transformed.

The Feldenkrais Method® is suitable for all and Functional Integration® lessons can be given to babies right through to old age.  Early childhood development is so important in shaping who we become and the Princes of Wales believes that these issues are “the social equivalent to climate change” and this is where the Feldenkrais Method® can help.

Are you ready to rewire, reorganise and re-root your life by experiencing the profound method that is The Feldenkrais Method®?

What is Pilates for
neurological conditions?

Ismini is a specialist in Pilates for neurological conditions, holding certifications to work with people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s disease. Many of the people she works with come to her thinking there is nothing they can do for their condition, and they are pleasantly surprised with the results. The exercises Ismini teaches can help the plasticity of the brain and allow the central nervous system to re-route information in order to strengthen the functionality of the musculoskeletal system, offering better mobility. All exercise programmes and lessons will be agreed upon after a thorough, in-depth consultation, which will allow Ismini to understand the particular challenges you face. You will then be able to work on suitable exercises together, and agree on aims to work towards.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Pilates has benefits for body and mind, helping you cope with the symptoms of your neurological condition.

  • Improves movement. Ismini uses techniques from The Feldenkrais Method® method with her Pilates sessions, which aims to reorganise movement by creating new connections between the brain and nervous system. She has achieved astounding results for clients with advanced MS, helping people with limited movement to walk short distances.
  • Helps you to relax. The benefits of Pilates aren’t just physical – there are many benefits for the mind, too. Pilates can give you a deep sense of relaxation, incorporating breathing and stretching exercises that leave you feeling looser. It’s a calming practice that has been proven the relieve stress, especially when practised regularly.
  • Work with an expert. Ismini has many years of experience behind her, and she has attended frequent training courses, working with people affected by all kinds of conditions. She will tailor her exercise programmes to you depending on your current range of movement and what it is possible for you to achieve.

What have our clients found?

Ismini works with a number of clients on a regular basis, offering one-to-one and group support to help manage the symptoms of various neurological conditions.

This is what one of her clients has to say about their experience:

“I have known Ismini for over 8 years now as my Pilates teacher, and I’ve always found her to be as interested in her subject as she is in her clients. Ismini has a unique way of connecting with people which is straightforward and respectful. And fortunately for us, she also has a good sense of humour.

Over the past year or so, Ismini has been training in The Feldenkrais Method® method, and this is something which I have directly benefited from. As someone who has a neurological condition, (pre-symptomatic Huntington’s disease), her one-to-one lessons have helped me to improve my balance, posture, and my speech. I hadn’t realised beforehand that this was possible, and her considered approach to teaching these exercises has been most welcome.”
